Rembrandt once painted the gallows-filed here. It was only at the end of the 19th century that the administrators of Amsterdam realised that the land north of the IJ belonged to Amsterdam. New industries and shipyards, such as NDSM could be established there. In the meantime, again a century later, much industry has given way to new activity in the field of art, culture and architecture. A bicycle trip along the Willem sluice, Sixhaven, Disteldorp, Ataturk village/monument, the studio of André Volten in the gatehouse of Asterdorp, the former Fokker factory and artists projects: a varied and exciting area.
