Noorderkerk - Church

Noordermarkt 48
1015 NA AMSTERDAM
Neighbourhood: Jordaan

Amsterdam's Noorderkerk (Northern church) was designed by Hendrick de Keyser and built between 1620 and 1623. The Noorderkerk, a protestant church, is exceptional in that it is built centrally with an octagonal ground plan and a superstructure in the shape of a Greek cross - with four equal arms.

Purpose-built
The Noorderkerk is one of the first churches in the world to be purpose-built for Calvinistic purposes. The pulpit is in the centre of the church, and although not ornate, the church has a simple beauty.

Concerts and farmers
These days the Noorderkerk attracts accomplished musicians to perform classical music, as its excellent acoustics and spacious interior makes it the perfect concert venue. On Saturday’s, the renowned organic farmer’s market is held in the shadow of the church.
