Munttoren

Muntplein 1
1111 AA AMSTERDAM
Neighbourhood: Rembrandtplein

The Munttoren (mint tower) is a remnant of the Regulierspoort, that was built between 1480 and 1487, and is part of the old, medieval city wall. The Regulierspoort consisted of a gate with a tower on each side. The tower used to mint coins in the 17th Century.

Tower bells
After the Munttoren's gate went up in flames in a 1618 fire, only the guard house and part of the western tower remained standing. The tower was rebuilt in Amsterdam renaissance style in 1619-1620, with a spire designed by Hendrick de Keyser, featuring a clockwork with four clockfaces. The original carillon was made by Pieter Hemony and the bells chime every quarter of an hour.
