KNSM/Java Island Walking Tour

Tweede Boomdwarsstraat 4
1015 LK AMSTERDAM
Neighbourhood: Central Station

KNSM Island is located in Amsterdam’s Oostelijk havengebied (eastern docklands) and was named after the Royal Dutch Steam Company (KNSM) that used to be located here. Passengers used to set sail from here bound for America. Today KNSM Island boasts striking architecture and artsy boutiques

Design and architecture
The Eastern Docklands went through a period of being a derelict terrain rife with squatters. During the last two decades, the eastern docklands have undergone a radical transformation. KNSM island is now home to eye-catching modern architecture, interior design shops and waterside cafes.

Walking or cycling tour
KNSM Island lends itself especially well to exploration on foot or by bike. Crossing the curvy bridges, some of the buildings you can’t miss include the residential Piraeus building by German architect Hans Kollhoff and Jo Coenen’s round building.
