De Torensluis

Singel 165a (Brug 9)
1012 VK AMSTERDAM
Neighbourhood: Canals

The Torensluis does appear to be a somewhat exaggerated bridge crossing the Singel. The reason for
this spacious set-up is the Jan Roodenpoortstoren which stood here until 1829. The dungeons of the tower have in recent years been restored and made accessible to the public, and nowadays exhibitions and events are held here too. The contours of the tower foundations can be detected in the bridge paving. The statue on the bridge is of Multatuli. Also on the bridge: the large, sunny ‘Villa Zeezicht’ and ‘Café van Zuylen’ terraces.
