In 2009, Amsterdam organized a record number of international conventions, placing it on the number 8 in the World ranking of international convention cities. This has been made evident by the list that the InternationalCongress & Convention Association (ICCA) publishes annually.
The number of conventions (98) in the capital city Amsterdam rose by 10,1 percent, outnumbering the number of conventions organized in cities like Beijing (96), Seoul (90) and Budapest (87). Amsterdam Tourism & Convention Board (ATCB) is extremely delighted with this development. Never before did Amsterdam receive such high scores in this field.
In the past years, the financial investment of the department of Economic Affairs of the city of Amsterdam as well as the support of Amsterdam corporations, has allowed ATCB to employ additional activities to promote Amsterdam as a city for conventions. These efforts are paying off.
Conditions for inclusion in the ICCA-ranking are that the convention has at least 50 participants, that it is organised on a regular basis and that it rotates between a minimum of three countries. Worldwide, the ICCA-ranking list and the ranking of the Union of International Associations (UIA) are considered to be most authoritative in the convention sector.
