As Chief Conductor of the RCO, Mr Jansons has been an important cultural ambassador for Amsterdam and the Netherlands – one particular high point being the RCO’s world tour to celebrate its 125th anniversary, which passed through six continents.

Jansons, originally from Latvia, made his RCO debut as guest conductor in 1988. Serving as chief conductor from 2004 to 2014, he furthered the international reputation of the RCO with renowned performances of works by Bruckner, Mahler, Strauss and Brahms.

The Silver Medal of the City of Amsterdam is awarded to people who have made an extraordinary contribution to Amsterdam for more than 15 years and enhanced the city’s reputation internationally.
