Monumentally Dutch
Designed by architect P.J.H. Cuypers and completed in 1876, Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum is the largest museum in the Netherlands. It houses a famous collection of Old Masters paintings including works by Rembrandt ('The Night Watch'), Vermeer and Frans Hals as well as delftware, sculpture, Asian art and prints.
Authentic sources from the past
The Rijksmuseum boasts an extensive cultural history collection which includes paintings, ship models, sculptures, archaeological artefacts, clothing, weapons, historical prints and photographs. The hundreds of thousands of items from the past collectively give a visual account of Dutch history within a global context.
Renovation
The Rijksmuseum is currently being renovated. Until the main building reopens in 2013, Golden Age masterpieces are on display in the Philips Wing on Museumplein. The rest of the museum's collection is showcased at the Rijksmuseum division in Amsterdam-Schiphol airport and at various domestic and foreign museums.
