Commissioned by Abraham Icek Tuschinski, the Tuschinski Film Theatre opened its doors to the general public in 1921. Architect Hijman Louis de Jong designed the building. The complex was made using many different styles, including the Amsterdam School (Amsterdam School), Jugendstil and Art Deco.
In WWII the building fell into German hands. It was initially called Tivoli. Major refurbishment commenced in the period 1998-2002, first of the exterior, then the interior. The fundamental aim of this extensive and costly restoration was to restore it to as it was in the days of Abraham Tuschinski.
