Built during the heyday of the Amsterdam Eastern docklands, Pakhuis de Zwijger (De Zwijger warehouse) functioned as a warehouse for refrigerated goods. After extensive renovation it now serves as a cultural meeting place for creative and innovative types. Network events, exhibitions, lectures, workshops, parties and get-togethers are held here regularly.
Architectural feat
The original warehouse was built in 1934 and was planned to be demolished to make space for a bridge when the Eastern Docklands area was revived. After extensive campaigning, however, the warehouse was declared a national heritage site. The eventual solution was a unique feat - the bridge was constructed to run straight through the building.
Multifunctional space
Pakhuis De Zwijger is host to a café/restaurant, various halls, radio and television studios and media workshops. Located at the Piet Heinkade above the Jan Schaeffer bridge, the warehouse also accommodates the offices of several cultural initiatives. Aside from a large hall that can seat 300 to 600 people, the building also features three smaller halls and an exhibition room.
