To visitors, the closed ranks of the canalhouses seem to be jealously guarding their inhabitants' privacy. They were, however, built as places to do business and receive guests. This hospitable attitude is reflected by the openness of the ground floor and gardens. In this tradition the Van Loon family opened their house to the public in 1973.
The house, built in 1672, was rented out to Ferdinand Bol, Rembrandt's famous pupil. In the 18th century it was redecorated in fashionable Louis XV style. In 1884 the house was bought as a wedding present for Willem Hendrik van Loon and his wife Thora Egidius, who, as Dame du Palais to queen Wilhelmina, received Amsterdam's upper class in the Salon.
