Amsterdam's Spaarndammerplantsoen is home to three imposing social housing blocks designed by Michel de Klerk. The expressionist apartment block popularly known as Het Schip (The Ship) is one of the best examples of the early 20th-century Amsterdam School architectural movement.
Museum Het Schip is located in the former post office, which was also designed by De Klerk. The impressive building is a feast for the eye but also provides plenty of food for thought by addressing questions including how and why Amsterdam turned into a social housing mecca and the cultural-historical value of the Amsterdam School.
The museum also provides access to a restored working class house, the exhibition on the Amsterdam School's sources of inspiration and an opportunity to see Michel de Klerk's world-famous tower.
