Beautiful Huize Frankendael is an old Dutch country estate at the fringes of the city centre, in Amsterdam Oost. A magnificent building that's surrounded by a large park, this type of buitenhuis was originally built as summer residences for wealthy inhabitants of the city. Frankendael is the last example in Amsterdam.
There's much to do on the grounds of Huize Frankendael: in the old coach house, you can find acclaimed restaurant Merkelbach; in the summer months, there's an organic market; and the estate's historical splendour is also regularly spiked with infusions of modern art, as the Frankendael Foundation houses exhibitions by young and often local artists.
