Felix Meritis, European Centre for Arts and Science, organises debates, lectures (often in English), concerts and theatre productions together with its (inter)national partners.
The 18th-century building of the former society 'Felix Meritis' (Fortunate through Merit), which was set up with the aim of promoting the arts and sciences, is a typical monument of the Enlightenment. The classical temple façade with its colossal Corinthian pilasters and pediment is characteristic of the neoclassical style.
The society's departments - visual arts and architecture, literature, trade, natural sciences and music - are symbolised in five embossed sculptures. The interior includes original 18th-century features such as the central staircase, the oval concert hall, renowned for its acoustics, and the domed roof - underneath which there used to be an observatory.
The building's original function has now been restored: once again it is a vibrant meeting place for artists, scientists and culture lovers. Felix Meritis is a centre for art, culture and science that connects the national and international worlds of creativity, intellectual debate, politics and business.
In 2013, Felix Meritus will celebrate their 225th anniversary. A host of special events will be organised to mark the milestone.
