The Theatercompagnie ('theatre company') resides here, in a former church at the Kloveniersburgwal, next to the Nieuwmarkt.
The building was designed in 1793 by city architect Abraham van der Hart for the Lutherian Congregation. Until 1984 the building was in use as a church, followed by a period where it had many functions and the building lost some of its former glory.
In 1995, De Theatercompagnie, founded in 1988 by director Theu Boermans, was given a ground lease on the building. The hall has seen many classics take the stage including Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Gilgamesh and Hamlet, and the actors nurtured here move on to TV and film. Delft-based architecture firm Mecanoo transformed the church into a theatre. The interior of the Compagnietheater is a beautiful combination of both historic and modern elements.
