During his study of Economics, Laurens Ivens specialised in microeconomics, public finance, development economics and environmental economics. During his Political Science studies, he focused on group processes, elections and international comparisons.  From 2001 to 2010 he was the Policy Assistant of the SP (Dutch Socialist Party) group in the House of Representatives. Since 2006 Ivens has been a member of the SP's City Council group, chairing it from 2010.

In the same year, 40 prominent Amsterdammers elected Ivens as Amsterdam Councillor of the Year. In the City Council he spoke on finance, art and culture, and sport. In his post as Senior Assistant Public Affairs at the ANWB (Royal Dutch Touring Club) he was concerned with advocacy in the field of road safety and infrastructure.

Ivens lives with his partner and has one child.
