Types of hospitals
The Netherlands has a reputation for providing a high standard of medical care. There are 11 hospitals in Amsterdam, which vary in size and areas of specialisation.
Some hospitals are set up in the style of university medical centres. As such, they attract researchers and specialists: a dynamic which adds to their ability to provide the most specialised care. Amsterdam has two university medical centres: the AMC and VU University Medical Center.
Similarly, teaching hospitals have affiliations with university medical centres. They attract specialists and provide a more general forum for research and training of student nurses and medical interns. Staff and students have access to on-site research facilities. Because of this, some more specialised treatments are offered here. Interns accompany medical professionals during many procedures. Amsterdam's teaching hospitals are Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis and Sint Lucas Andreas Ziekenhuis.
General hospitals are a traditional style of hospital, which provide an excellent standard of care and will refer patients to more specialised facilities if required.
