One-way Prinsengracht

The new rules are being trialled from April 2017 to February 2018. Boats will only be allowed to travel on Prinsengracht in the IJ-to-Amstel direction. One part of Prinsengracht – between Spiegelgracht and Amstel – already has a one-way traffic rule, valid in the boating season, and this has been shown to have positive effects, reducing congestion and minimising inconvenience to residents. The one-way rule is now applied on the entire length of Prinsengracht.

Easing congestion

Another change to be trialled in the same period is a ban on entering Grimburgwal from Oudezijds Voorburgwal, making the part of Oudezijds Voorburgwal that’s between Grimburgwal and the IJ a de-facto one-way canal for larger vessels. Breaking the rules will result in a fine of €340 for breaking entry restrictions and €230 for violating the one-way rule.

Further measures

The effects of the trials will be monitored at a number of locations in the city for one year. If successful, the City may make the rules permanent and will consider further canals in the city centre for becoming one-way canals.
