The Amsterdam area has an efficient network of public transportation. From 22 June 2009, the PT Smart Card (OV-Chipkaart) aims to be the only way to pay for public transport in the Netherlands.
Around one million people use the public tranport network of trams, metro, busses and ferries each day in Amsterdam.
The company who takes care that it all runs smoothly is the GVB. For more information, including departure times and routes click here.
As of 22 June 2009, the PT Smart Card (OV-Chipkaart) replaced most tickets, passes and the common paper tickets sold on trams. This card is valid for travel by tram, bus, and metro. Commuters will no longer have to calculate fares based on how many zones they will travel. This function will be taken care of automatically. Cards may be purchased at kiosks, cigar shops and supermarkets and ticket bureaus in Amsterdam and Amstelveen. For more information on the card click here.
The train is a quick way to travel around the Netherlands with excellent connections to city and regional public transport and to other countries.
