Whether it's falling from the sky, around the piles that hold up our homes, held back by the dykes of the North Sea or glimmering in the evening light in the canals of Amsterdam, the Dutch have a very special relationship with water.
To illustrate just how seriously the Dutch take water, Amsterdam has the following: a pizza delivery service by boat, several floating restaurants including a multi-level Chinese Sea Palace, a floating flower market, around 3,000 houseboats, festivities like Gay Pride and Queen's Day that see hundreds of elaborately dressed people and boats packing the canals, classical concerts on floating stages, a guy who just boats around playing the violin and a few floating wooden shoes.
A great way to show off the city to visiting family, friends or associates is to take them on a canal boat tour. A great way to enjoy a Sunday afternoon is to pack a picnic and rent a boat for a few hours. For a list of boat rental companies click here.
Information on owning a boat in Amsterdam, including city regulations, will be added to this section soon.
