Moving to another country can be an overwhelming experience, however with proper organisation and planning it can be a smooth process.
Plan ahead, keep on top of deadlines, and just breathe! Below is our basic checklist to help you prepare for your exciting new adventure abroad.
Obtain authenticated originals of all birth certificates, marriages certificates and other legal documents
Apply or renew essential travel documents such as passports and driving licenses (when applicable)
Arrange needed legal requirements such as visas, working permits and/or residence permits
Investigate local health insurance possibilities and regulations
Have official translations of important documents made such as birth certificates, diplomas, etc.
Obtain health certificates and any needed vaccinations
Arrange travel documents (plane tickets, train tickets, etc.)
Arrange pet vaccinations (if required) and transportation
Arrange temporary accommodation in your new city
Inform municipal and/or tax officials of your departure (if required)
Investigate schooling/childcare possibilities
Rent, sell or let go of your current home
Organise the shipping and/or transfer of all possessions (whether by moving or relocation company)
Collect and/or arrange residence permit and/or work permit
Arrange a local bank account
Arrange local health insurance*
Obtain a driving licence or exchange your current licence (if required)
Get connected (arrange telephone, internet, utilities, etc.)
Learn the local language
Join a group, club or association to meet others
Get active in the local and/or expat community
