Amsterdam's football (soccer) team is Ajax Amsterdam, one of the most successful European teams in history. They play their home games at the impressive Amsterdam ArenA stadium. See further down the page for information regarding potential victory celebrations for Ajax.
Amsterdammers love their sport. Gyms are always packed and even in the rain and cold you'll see joggers giving it their best around the Vondelpark. Likewise, they show perseverance in such terrible conditions on bikes rather than resort to public transport. However, when it's match time, thousands of football fanatics in the city can often be found in the packed pubs or at home watching the game on TV.
Highlights programmes are great, but everyone knows there's nothing like the atmosphere of a live game at the Amsterdam ArenA. Accompanying any great team is an enthusiastic fanbase and the Amsterdam fans are loyal and very vocal.
Once in the stadium, it's hard not to join in the spirit of things and there's plenty of chanting and stomping of feet. It's not tricky stuff, these are football fans not opera singers, so you'll catch on to the tunes soon enough. And be sure to be cheering for Ajax of course!
Matches are played through the winter months so rug up warm because you'll be sitting in the one spot for a couple of hours, but the fun and atmosphere is all worth it. Tickets to games are always first available to Ajax Club Card holders and then usually become available to non-card holders nearer the date of the match.
Amsterdam Football Club (AFC) Ajax was founded in March 1900 and is historically one of the most successful clubs in the world, one of just five clubs to have earned the right to keep the European Cup. True fans can take the World of Ajax tour and check out the Ajax Museum to see the Holy Grail.
In September 2011, the Ajax Experience opened on Rembrandtplein in the city centre - an inspirational, interactive journey into the heart of Ajax. In just over an hour, the Ajax Experience introduces visitors to the Ajax philosophy that continues to produce football heroes while delving into the club’s history and major achievements.
Ex-Ajax player Frank de Boer took charge as Ajax trainer as 2010 drew to a close. A much-loved figure at the club, he inspired the players to narrowly win a closely-fought battle for the league title which meant that Ajax returned to Champion’s League football in the 2011/2012 season.
After a bumpy mid-season ride in 2011/2012, Ajax managed to bring about a good return to form and a run of excellent results meant that they took home the league title for the second year running!
