The news has spread faster than you can say yes. But wait, you just did! Now what? If you're planning on marrying in Amsterdam - and who could really blame you - you'll need to consider a few details before taking the plunge. Weddings are as complicated as you make them. Just as well, we've made the process of getting there a bit easier.
A notice of intention to marry (ondertrouw) is required in order to marry in the Netherlands. This notice must be given no later than 14 days before the marriage or wedding ceremony. A notice of marriage can only be made at the municipality (stadsdeel kantoor) in which you or your partner is registered.
On giving notice you can indicate on which date and in which municipality you wish to marry or enter into a registered partnership. Your marriage should be officiated within 12 months of filing the notice, otherwise the notice is rendered invalid.
The below conditions of Dutch law apply to marriages in the Netherlands.
You cannot currently be married or be part of a registered partnership.
You must be of age (18 or older).
One partner must be registered in Amsterdam in order to give notice of marriage in Amsterdam.
You must give notice of marriage at least 14 days prior to the marriage (the notice of marriage can, however, be given up to 12 months in advance).
There cannot be a blood relationship among marrying partners.
Same sex marriages are possible and legal (see the article Amsterdam Gay Rights).

The notice of marriage is free of charge. There are charges for additional documents you may have to submit and for the official wedding ceremony. Costs of the ceremony depend on the location and time. In true Dutch style, the ceremony is free at certain days and times in Amsterdam. Click for a list of free ceremonies (in Dutch).

Registering a marriage with the personal records database (GBA) of your municipality is compulsory if you live in the Netherlands. A foreign marriage can be registered in the Netherlands only after the foreign marriage certificate has been legalised.
