Highly skilled migrants

The Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) developed the Expatcenter Procedure, an entry procedure specifically for highly skilled migrants, or ‘knowledge migrants’ via the Expatcenter Amsterdam.

Expatcenter Procedure: for employers

With the creation of the Expatcenter, a new process was developed whereby an employer can now initiate the registration procedure for a residence permit prior to the new employee’s arrival in the country. Once in the Netherlands, the employee can then collect a national residence permit and complete municipal registration procedures in a single visit to the Expatcenter. They will also receive a citizen service number (BSN) shortly after their appointment. For more detailed information on the procedure please see: The Expatcenter Procedure and How to Apply.

Information for expat employees

You can visit the Immigration and Naturalisation (IND) website to learn more about:

  • The entry procedure for highly skilled migrants and labour migrants (website in English).

  • Organisations and companies who are allowed to participate in the special entry procedure for Highly Skilled Migrants.

How the Expatcenter can help you, as a highly skilled migrant

After your employer has arranged a time and day for you at the Expatcenter, you can expect the following to be arranged at your appointment:

  • Registration with municipal administration (GBA).

  • Your public service number. This registration number will be used for your work, opening a bank account, for hospital visits, for example. You will need to request this yourself once you have registered with the municipality and it will be mailed to you after a few weeks.

  • You will receive your residence permit.
