Basic Civic Integration

If you are planning to stay in the Netherlands longer than 3 months and you are from a country requiring an MVV, part of your MVV procedure may include the basisexamen inburgering. This exam must be completed in your country of residence (at the embassy) before coming to the Netherlands.

Two-part exam

The Basic Civic Integration exam consists of the following parts:

  • knowledge of the Dutch society

  • knowledge of the Dutch language

Exemptions

The following people are exempt from the basic civic integration test:

  • persons under the age of 18

  • person from countries not requiring an MVV

  • persons of Surinam nationality who have completed lager onderwijs in the Dutch language and can prove this by written certificate from the Surinam Ministry of Education and Volksontwikkeling

  • persons living temporarily in the Netherlands (for reasons such as studies, au pair, exchange, medical treatment, etc.)

  • persons with a work permit, zelfstandigen and knowledge migrants (partners are all exempt)

  • family members of asylum seekers with an asylum residence permit
