Seasonal flu and what you can do

Unfortunately one of life’s certainties is that every winter, the flu virus rears its ugly head and this year is no exception. The flu is back in the country and doing the rounds. Various flu viruses are active this season, including the Swine (Mexican) flu that made an infamous entrance in 2009 and now goes under the official title of Influenza A(H1N1)-2009.

The most prominent strain of ‘standard’ flu now active is reported to be no more serious than in the years preceding 2009. People in high-risk categories have already been vaccinated against the virus but if you have any concerns, contact your doctor for advice.

Seasonal flu in the Netherlands 

Avoiding infection can be a challenge but strict personal hygiene will minimise your chances of catching the virus. Following the below tips will also help keep you flu-free:

  • Avoid or reduce contact with people who already have flu.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth wherever possible

  • Try not to sneeze or cough in the direction of others

  • Try to use paper towels or tissues and discard straight after use.

  • Wash your hands regularly and the inside of your nose with soap and water

  • Make sure rooms are well ventilated, leaving windows open or doors ajar

  • Keep your home clean, wiping surfaces and objects regularly.
