Are you pregnant or planning to give birth in the Netherlands? Would you like to know more about the local birth culture? An upcoming conference provides the answers you need and offers insight on both sides of the birthing debate.
Touted as the "first-ever expat-friendly" professional baby conference, an impressive line-up of speakers and workshops will keep you busy on Saturday, 29 January.
The country is harshly divided between home and hospital births. The Dutch media continues to debate home births after studies show a high infant mortality rate in the Netherlands. Enter Babyface’s conference "Giving Birth in The Netherlands: The Dutch Maternity System & Women’s Rights to Informed Choices". It is the first ever conference on the Dutch maternity system.
Neither advocating for home or hospital birth, the conference presents all options to meet a women’s right to make an informed choice. Discover the merits and demerits of home, hospital and birth centre births, pain relief, interventions, birth and pregnancy resources and what to expect from the local maternity system.
Several high profile speakers will be present at the conference. From Dr. Simone Buitendijk (Professor of Maternal and Child Health and Midwifery Studies at the University of Amsterdam Medical Centre) to Frits Schouten (Verloskundige, AMC) and Beatrijs Smulders (Founder and Director of The Birth Centre Amsterdam).
A full list of speakers can be found on the BabyFace website.
