Overall the Dutch tend to take exceptional care of thier teeth. It is common practice in the Netherlands to visit a dentist (tandarts) once or twice a year for a check-up (controle).
Ask around. Friends, neighbours or the family GP may know of someone. Alternatively, consult the Yellow Pages (Gouden Gids) for dentists, orthodontists and dental hygienists. Then, simply telephone a dentist and ask to join his or her patient list. The municipality can provide more information and perhaps the names of dentists who speak your language.
The Public Health Service of Amsterdam (GGD) lists dentists on the Amsterdam social map (sociale kaart). To access the list from this link, which is in Dutch only, go to Catogorieen, under which you will see gezondheid. Click gezondheid for a drop-down menu, which includes tandzorg. This link will take you to another drop-down menu from which you should click tandartsen.
For emergency dental treatment outside surgery hours, telephone the practice. An answering machine will tell who to contact in an emergency. In general, the information is in Dutch.
For those over the age of 18, the cost of dental care is not included in the basic package (basispakket) of a health insurance policy. Supplementary insurance can cover up to 75 per cent of the cost. For the exact coverage, check the policy terms or contact the insurer.
