Mike Berry

mike berry

Mike Berry is 32, a design project manager and lives in the Jordaan who has lived in Amsterdam for 5 and a half years.

What brought you to this city?

A Dutch wife.

What are your cultural pros and cons?

I try not to have any. I think buitenlanders (foreigners) here concentrate too much on what they don't like or what is different. Differences are a beautiful quirk of living in another country and it doesn't do anyone any good to complain about them. If they are really a problem, you can always go home.

Is there anything you miss from your home?

I miss the beaches and the mountains.

Is there anything you do differently now?

I don't drive, I bike everywhere.

Favourite Dutch word or phrase?

Geweldig! (Great!)

Favourite memory of the city?

Kicking back on a summer's evening on my boat or dak terras (roof terrace).

What is your personal recommendation (restaurant, cafe?)

Cafe de Klos - Best meat restaurant ever!

Have you tried the herring yet?

Nee, and I don't intend to.

What advice would you have for a newcomer?

Throw yourself into everything. Embrace the differences and the quirks. Don't get stuck in an expat bubble.
