The 38th Vondelpark Run races into Amsterdam on Sunday, 15 January 2012. A sporting event for the whole family, the Vondelparkloop weaves through the famous park in Amsterdam, following the main path.
Advance registration for the event is open until early January but you can still take part if you turn up early and register on the day. However, each event has a pre-determined maximum number of participants and once the limit is reached, no further entrants are admitted. And be warned - in 2011, the maximum number of entrants was reached a week before the event so sign up early (in Dutch) to avoid disappointment.
Come rain or shine, the Vondelparkloop will go ahead, only icy conditions can put a halt to the fun. The Vondelpark is a protected historical monument which means that only limited measures can be taken to combat the ice. However, the show will still go on in mildly slippery condition and will only be cancelled if the circuit is hit by extreme ice.
The course involves either 1.2 or 3 circuits of the Vondelpark - one circuit of the park is approximately 3.25 kilometres. In order to obtain the required distance, the start and finish lines are separated by 120 metres. The start and finish are close to the Stayokay Vondelpark Amsterdam, where the changing facilities are also located. Check out the course map for a better idea of the course.
With a number events on the programme, the Vondelpark will be a hive of activity throughout the day. Here’s what’s planned:
10:45 Stayokay Childrens Run (12 years and under), 1.5 km
11:15 Stayokay ‘Trimloop’, 3.5 km and 6.7 km
12:30 Stayokay ‘Trimloop’, 10 km
14:00 Business run, 10 km
14:00 KNAU competition event, 10 km
Part of the charm of the event its accessibility. So even if you don’t fancy a run, come along and support those taking part – why not combine it with taking the dog for a walk or an afternoon drink at the Blauwe Theehuis, Vertigo or the Vondeltuin.
