What began as History Week in 2003 has blossomed into one of the largest historical events in the Netherlands, reflected by an expanded programme and new concept: History Month. The event sees hundreds of cultural and historical organisations participate to put on a huge range of events based on an annual theme.
2011's theme was Me & Us (Ik en Wij), which explored various aspects of the Dutch nationality.
Me and Us examined the building blocks of the Dutch national identity by reflecting on a history that features multiple languages, colonial exploits and multiculturalism.
By examining national identity in the light of other identities, 2011's History Month attempted to show how identity was, and is, constructed.
A whole variety of events were held as part of History Month and of course there was plenty to see and do for the whole family in Amsterdam. Here’s our pick of the 2011 events:
The Anne Frank Huis opened a new multimedia exhibition entitled 'Anne Frank´s Amsterdam'. The exhibition showed what life was like during the war using eyewitness accounts and historical events.
Museum van Loon celebrated the opening of the restored coach house, which made it the only place in the country where the public can view a representative canal house in it's complete and original glory.
The City Archives presented an exhibition that looked back at the Amsterdam Nieuw-West District in the 1950s & 60s. The exhibition used innumerable photographs to paint a vivid picture of life in the District in the first two decades of its existence.
