Green Roofs in the spotlight

An upcoming event in Amsterdam's Museumplein helps raise environmental awareness for children in an entertaining way.

Creative City Lab

On Wednesday 25 November, Amsterdam's Creative City Lab is organising a lively and playful event on Museumplein to draw attention the benefits of green roofs, city rooftops which are covered with soil and vegetation. Green roofs help improve the air quality in the city as well as absorb rainwater, provide insulation, and create a habitat for wildlife. They also help to lower urban air temperatures.

Fun with Sint and friends

Special guest Sinterklaas

The event will take place, most appropriately, on one of the best-known green roofs in Amsterdam, the angled, grass-covered roof of the Albert Hein supermarket, located in the southwest corner of the Museumplein, across from the Concertgebouw. From 12:00 onwards, a variety of activities is planned, including learning how to make a green roof, sliding down the Museumplein's green roof, and sack hopping. Lending a hand will be a large group of Zwarte Piets, all under the watchful eye of course of Sinterklaas, who will have an extra large supply of pepernoten on hand.

At 15:00, there will be a group photo with all participating children and the Piets in front of the I amsterdam letters, in front of the reflecting pool.

A special invitation for the event is going out to children from the nearby primary schools as wel as primary schools from the boroughs of Westerpark and Geuzenveld, along with their parents.
