A majestic Christmas tree returns to Amsterdam this year to take its traditional place towering above Dam Square in the city centre. Grown in the German Ardennes, the tree stands an impressive 22 metres tall and is decorated with four kilometres of Christmas lights.
After lumbering in the dark for a few days, the tree was illuminated in all its glory on Wednesday, 7 December.
An imposing feature on Dam Square, the tree is adorned with a whopping 40,000 energy-saving LED fairy lights.
Entertainer Karin Bloemen flicked the switch to bring the festive beacon to life.
The Amsterdam Music School Children’s Choir were on hand to provide musical accompaniment to the occasion in the form of Christmas carols.
The illuminated Christmas tree and de Bijenkorf building on Dam Square form a centrepiece for the Christmas decorations installed earlier on the lamp posts, making the square an attractive Amsterdam highlight this festive season. The Christmas tree will be on Dam Square until 8 January, 2012.
