‘Tis the season to take home something you won’t find on the high street with a trip to one of Amsterdam’s Christmas markets. There’s sure to be one near you bedecked with stocking ideas; just follow the smell of mulled wine, hot chestnuts and fresh pine. Prettige feestdagen!
Those on the hunt for an original gift idea all wrapped up in traditional holiday cheer are in luck this Christmas! With 26 markets, Amsterdam has plenty of stalls to browse, and most are open rain or shine.

The Funky Sunday Markets are fast becoming an institution in Amsterdam and now they're back with a special Christmas edition. The Funky Xmas Market at the Westergasfabriek is packed with cheerful decorations, delicious aromas and numerous craft stalls to create a happy holiday atmosphere. The Funky Xmas Market is on 18 December, from 12:00 to 18:00. Free entrance.
Head to the Rembrandtplein this festive season and delve into a magical Christmas fairytale! Hidden amongst twinkling Christmas trees and snowmen, you’ll find countless market stalls selling festive goodies and there’s even an ice rink. Winterland Amsterdam arrives on 2 December and is in town until 8 January 2012.
Located at either end of the Leidsestraat, both Leidseplein and Koningsplein will be home to various festive market stalls. The Leidseplein Winter Plaza is open from 2 December until 29 December (the ice skating rink is already open) and the smaller Koningsplein Winter Market will remain open until 8 January 2012.
For the month of December, Christmas trees - big, small, quirky, insanely green – are available in their dozens, making the floating Bloemenmarkt the ideal place to pluck your living room pine. Bonus: The Christmas Palace, Amsterdam's unique emporium of festive goodies that's open all year round, is located alongside the market.
Smaller Christmas Markets are also planned for outside the city centre and are a great place to pick up yuletide bargains. Here’s a selection of the neighbourhood markets coming up this year: Winkelcentrum Reigersbos (Zuidoost District, 9 December), Osdorp (Nieuw-West District, 10 & 18 December) and Sierplein (Nieuw-West District, 16 December). And for an organic, foodie twist to Christmas, head to the Pure Markt at Park Frankendael on 18 December!
