Redundancies are certainly challenging but your contribution to the local economy doesn’t stop overnight. If you’re living in the Netherlands, you may be entitled to benefits while you seek other employment. In the second of credit-crunch specials, we look at the UWV WERKbedrijf (Job Centre) and how the service can help you claim and survive the crisis.
This information highlights the benefits you might be able to claim after redundancy. Note: it is intended as a guideline only for general use. Financial support will vary, so for detailed information on your personal situation, it is essential you speak to an advisor at your local UWV Werkbedrijf.
WW uitkering refers to the payment you may receive based on your last employment contract; it is not a welfare benefit.
If you’ve been made redundant, you can register as unemployed with UWV Werkbedrijf either online or at your local office. It is recommended you do this on the first day of your unemployment.
Registering online is the quickest process but only available in Dutch. If you register at your local office, you will be offered assistance in English (including other languages) but enquire with your local office for assistance if language is a consideration. The formulierenbrigade, literally the form-filling brigade, is other excellent source of help.
Once you have registered with the UWV, it’s advisable to apply for the WW uitkering (payment) within the first week of your unemployment; this time period may vary so check with your local advisor.

If you decide to stay on in the Netherlands, your rights as a resident will be equal to those of your Dutch neighbours. With a little local knowledge, and your benefits in hand, prepare for new opportunities on the horizon.
