On 10 June 2009, Amsterdam City Council agreed to reduce the number of city stadsdelen (districts) from fourteen to seven to strengthen partnerships and create smoother-running administrative systems.
While current districts Centrum, Noord, and Zuidoost will remain unchanged, the three new districts (and their encompassing neighbourhoods) are:
Zuid (Oud Zuid, Zuideramstel)
Oost (Zeeburg and Oost and Watergraafsmeer)
Nieuw-West (Osdorp, Slotervaart, Geuzenveld-Slotermeer)
West (Bos en Lommer, De Baarsjes, Oud-West, Westerpark)
From July, the process of creating the four new districts will begin amongst the current neighbourhoods to be ready to begin operating on 1 May 2010, after the municipal elections of 3 March 2010.
