Number of districts (stadsdelen) to change

From fourteen to seven stadsdelen

Stadsdelen change over

On 10 June 2009, Amsterdam City Council agreed to reduce the number of city stadsdelen (districts) from fourteen to seven to strengthen partnerships and create smoother-running administrative systems.

While current districts Centrum, Noord, and Zuidoost will remain unchanged, the three new districts (and their encompassing neighbourhoods) are:

  • Zuid (Oud Zuid, Zuideramstel)

  • Oost (Zeeburg and Oost and Watergraafsmeer)

  • Nieuw-West (Osdorp, Slotervaart, Geuzenveld-Slotermeer)

  • West (Bos en Lommer, De Baarsjes, Oud-West, Westerpark)

Implimenting the change-over

From July, the process of creating the four new districts will begin amongst the current neighbourhoods to be ready to begin operating on 1 May 2010, after the municipal elections of 3 March 2010.
