Population of Amsterdam on the rise

The population of Amsterdam continues to grow. As of 1 January 2010, the number of people registered as residents of Amsterdam was 767.773. The year before this was at 756.347. Amsterdam boasts 178 nationalities, one more than in 2009. This is according to recent results disclosed by the Department for Research and Statistics.

Diversity and the city

The arrival of a person from Liechtenstein and another from Equatorial Guinea this year bumped up the number of nationalities by two. The number decreased however by one, as a person from Qatar either left or entered the naturalisation process.

The variation between districts is not very large. At 156, the District of West has the most nationalities. The District of Noord has the lowest with 140.

Nationalities

Of residents with foreign nationality, the Moroccans are most strongly represented. They are followed respectively by Turkish, German, British and Ghanaian. Percentage-wise, the greatest increase has been with Eastern European nationalities. The number of Hungarians, Bulgarians and Romanians grew by over 20%. The number of Poles, Nigerians and Ghanaians as well, with over 10%.

Passports

Many people with foreign nationality also have a Dutch passport. This applies not only to Moroccans and Turkish residents, but also to several other populations. This means that ultimately 88% of Amsterdam residents have Dutch nationality.
