On 21 May 2010, interim mayor of Amsterdam Lodewijk Asscher awarded Jasper Schuringa a municipal honour for his part in thwarting a bomb attack on a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on 26 December last year. He risked his life to stymie the attack and the Amsterdam Municipality praised Mr. Schuringa, saying he displayed ‘extraordinary valour’ to avert the threat.
The Amsterdam Municipality does not have a distinct honour for heroic Amsterdammers at its disposal and therefore awarded Mr. Schuringa a unique medal engraved with the words of the city arms: ‘Valiant, Resolute, Merciful’. Mr. Schuringa was invited to the Mayor’s official residence along with members of his family to receive his award.
Interim Mayor Asscher: "You acted on your instincts that something was amiss and are blessed with outstanding reflexes and an uncompromising desire to do good. And, while I think you are still a regular Amsterdammer, you have proved yourself to be an exceptional individual. I think the action you took was heroic, but more than that, it was valiant, resolute and it was merciful."
