The European Capital City Tourism Report has revealed that the number of nights spent in Amsterdam hotels rose by 3.5 per cent in 2010 to 9.7 million nights.
Amsterdam outperformed all other European capitals in terms of growth in the amount of nights spent in hotels.
The report published by Roland Berger Strategy Consultants was published on Wednesday, 21 December and contains research into tourism in 24 European capital cities.
Amsterdam, Lisbon, Stockholm, Zurich, Vienna, Rome and Copenhagen experienced the most growth in nights spent at hotels. From all the cities examined in the report, Amsterdam boasts the most nights spent in a hotel relative to the number of residents (13 nights per resident).
When looking at general attractiveness to tourists, the report ranked Paris in first place. Amsterdam came second, followed by Rome in third place.
In terms of the actual number of nights spent in hotels in 2010, Amsterdam achieved eighth place. London and Paris topped the list with 48.7 million and 35.8 million nights respectively, followed by Berlin, Rome, Madrid, Prague and Vienna. After Amsterdam, Istanbul and Stockholm completed the top 10.
