In August, work will begin on a new city park in Amsterdam as part of the creation of a new residential district called the Amstelkwartier (Amstel Quarter).
The new residential district will be created in the sweeping curve of the River Amstel, south of the peninsula known as the Omval. The City of Amsterdam is working closely with several developers on the project which will bring with it 1,500 residences, a primary school, a climate-neutral hotel and a public park.
The park was designed based on input from people currently living in the area and is set to be a spacious development featuring a playground and extensive space for recreation. The City of Amsterdam has reached agreements with the companies required to leave in order to make the development possible.
The Amstelkwartier will also be home to a marina, although without a wharf. The marina will include catering facilities focused on passers-by. The RIC rowing association will remain at its current location on the River Amstel.
Besides the new park, the Amstelkwartier will comprise 1,500 residences, 5,500 m2 of surface area dedicated to offices and shops, a hotel, a nursery and a school.
Construction of the park is scheduled to begin in August with construction of the first residences expected to start in September. The park and residences are expected to be completed in 2013.
The BadBuiten swimming pool will remain in its current temporary location until 2012 before moving to a permanent home in the Amstel, close to the marina.
