Henk de Jong is the Amsterdam Secretary General. He is the primary advisor to the College of Mayor and Alderpersons and is ultimately responsible for services in the city. He also represents the City of Amsterdam in various regional, national and European matters.
As the most senior civil servant, the Secretary General is responsible for maintaining links between the civil service, the board and society. As such, he works closely with the city centre administrators, the civil service, the city council and partner organisations both inside and outside of the city.
The Secretary General fulfils the following roles as part of this position:
Primary advisor to the College of Mayor and Alderpersons
General Manager of the city
Director of the Administrative Service
Representative of the city centre and the municipality as a whole.
After studying Public Administration, Henk de Jong embarked on his career in 1991 as a researcher at the University of Leiden. From 1992, he held positions advising on various administrative and governmental issues for the B&A Groep and subsequently, for Berenschot.
In 2000, he founded the Lysias Consulting Group and was at the helm of the company for 6 years. De Jong then became Policy Director at the Rotterdam Administrative Service, where he was also acting Secretary General. He made the move to Amsterdam in October 2007.
