Best Slice of Camp

Darren writes for the gay community and the modern metrosexuals who like to be in their company. As a volunteer at Pink Point (the world's 1st Homo information kiosk) and author of the "Bent Guide to Gay & Lesbian Amsterdam", I've got the goss on everything that ain't straight around town.

Best Slice of Camp

De Taart van Mijn Tante (the cake from my Auntie) looks like something Dame Edna would run if in charge of Barbie’s bakery. This haute patisserie is seriously camp and art house kitsch all rolled into an amazing display of architectural wonders made out of icing and sponge cake.

Sugar Never Tasted so Sweet

Those with a weak disposition need read no further, this Amsterdam institution is strictly SM: Seriously Mouth-watering. Just around the corner from the Heineken Brewery & Museum is De Taart van Mijn Tante - an experience just as bad for those watching their waistlines.

The recently opened Teahouse on Ferdinand Bolstraat (just around the corner from their ever busy bakery) is always full, especially on weekends.

Dreamhouse Teahouse

Normally reserved Dutch men & women crowd around retro 50s & 60s furniture, salivating at the sculptural pieces adorning every doily covered table, eyes wide like kiddies on too much red cordial before getting stuck into their sugar-coated-fetish-on-a-plate. Oh, light meals like quiches and muffins are also served but why waste time waiting for dessert?

Bake-off Beauties

Since 1989 owner Siemon and staff have wowed Amsterdam with their over-the-top-wedding, birthday and who-needs-a-reason cakes that defy the meaning of restraint. So great has been the demand that orders are by appointment only and they don’t come cheap. But if you’re after Bridal cakes that go off with a bang (literally, these baby’s come with built-in fireworks!), Coming of Age cakes (with anatomically-correct depictions of the facts of life), or just want to see your boss bolt down his business, these wizards with egg-whisks can put anyone’s corporate logo up in lights, er, light creamy marzipan-topped marvels.

Bed & Bakefast

Cakeaholics can now literally sleep with all those delicious slices under their pillow, as 2 floors above have just been renovated into the charming B&B, Cake Under My Pillow. Your tart of an Auntie never spoiled you so much.
