The Wallenfestival ('De Wallen' is the Dutch term for Amsterdam's red light district) offers a large range of activities: there's theatre, dance and (open-air) music performances, film screenings, a street parade and a Celtic market.
The Wallen area is situated between Geldersekade, Nieuwmarkt, Kloveniersburgwal, Nieuwe Doelenstraat, Rokin, Dam, Damrak and Central Station. The organisation of the festival aims at showcasing the historical and cultural riches of the area to new and existing audiences (residents, artists and Dutch and international tourists) and at stimulating interaction between all groups.
The programme includes the Sweelinck festival, a festival dedicated to the organ music by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, his contemporaries and his students, a classical concert organised by NedphO GO!, part of the Dutch Philharmonic Orchestra, and screenings of film about the Wallen. Bands and musicians include the 4tuozen, Harmony Glen, Garderobo's All Stars, SunFireSouls, TenTemPiés and Giant Tiger Hooch.
