From slum to riches: the Jordaan
The Jordaan is one of those chocolate box areas of Amsterdam with its meandering canals and old-world charm. Despite rising rents, it's also a very popular place to live and is often home to a media circus. Amsterdam's reputation for tolerance is very much alive in the Jordaan, culminating in the Jordaan Festival.
The oompha of it all
The Jordaan Festival is a big street party established in 1975 that celebrates the area's colourful history around the Marnixstraat, Elandsgracht and Appeltjesmarkt. This year's programme is typically gezellig (the popular Dutch word for cosy) including drum bands, children's games, opera, cabaret, boules competitions, and mass sing-alongs. More than anything the festival is about the ballad or levensliederen (songs about life).
Jordaan spirit
Famous Dutch minstrels return annually to croon among local folk heroes like the immortal one-eyed Johnny Jordaan, Tante Leen and Johnny Meyer. Songs of hardship can also be heard from classic sing-along bars De Twee Zwaantjes and Café Nol. A few years ago levenslied legend André Hazes put on a show to a crowd of 3,000 in the pouring rain. Suddenly he ran to the edge of the stage and cried: "You're in the rain, I'm in the rain!" That's Jordaan spirit for you.
