Live at Concertgebouw
The Robeco Summer Concerts Series, taking place throughout July and August, is an integral part of Amsterdam's summer cultural calendar. Dedicated to diversity, it brings together some very special performances from the classical realm and beyond. World music, children's productions and jazz add to the Concertgebouw line-up.
Balmy summer evenings
This year, the concerts will lead the audience to the summery Bohemia that's the home of Antonín Dvořák and his compositions, as well as a little weekend trip to the Vienna of Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert and Bruckner. Further on the itinerary: a trip to the romantic warmth of France, past Ravel's beautiful works, the mystery of Debussy, the grandeur of the much-loved folk song collection 'Chants d'Auvergne' and the Organ Symphony by Saint-Saëns.
Sizzling, jazzy highlights
The jazzy side of Robeco's summer programme features, amongst many others, A Dutch Songbook by baritone saxophonist Jan Menu and pianist Jasper Soffers as well as performances by Tineke Postma and Eric Vloeimans. Sounds from across the globe are served up by 'electric acoustic classical band' The Absolute Ensemble, who'll be dedicating a night to the tango, South African trumpet legend Hugh Masekela and Portuguese queen of the fado Dulce Pontes.
Culinary delights
All this musical diversity should clearly not be taken in on an empty stomach, but thankfully even that is, um, catered for. The Robeco Summer Restaurant in the Concertgebouw offers a three-course dinner from all fresh and organic ingredients, and for the smaller appetite, a glass of cava and some sushi is also on offer.
