The annual Gaudeamus Muziekweek ('Music Week') focuses on new works by young composers, with participants also competing for the Gaudeamus Composers Award. The festival provides a great overview of the newest developments in contemporary music every year.
Never has classical been so contemporary as with the Gaudeamus Muziekweek - so don't expect traditional arrangements or a 'Best of Bach' programme. Instead, the Gaudeamus's performers usually revel in making contemporary music that challenges their listeners' perceptions.
When Amsterdam's Gaudeamus Foundation closed its (well-sound-proofed) doors, the Muziekcentrum Nederland took over the organisation of the Muziekweek to ensure that lovers of contemporary music may still enjoy the world-renowned festival every September.
A large part of the Gaudeamus Muziekweek is the Gaudeamus International Composers Award for young composers. Each year sees a few hundred entrants, from which 15 finalists are chosen.
