Amsterdam's Zeedijk comes alive for Hartjesdagen (Days of Hearts) on 20 & 21 August. Originally a medieval national holiday, the tradition has today developed a carnival character complete with cross-dressers, a Dragon dance and lashings of beer, drawing thousands to the street near Central Station.
After a period off the radar after being banned during the German occupation, Hartjesdagen was finally revived in 1997 on Amsterdam's Zeedijk, the city's oldest street and once a no-go area. Today, the Zeedijk is home to a thriving Chinese and Dutch community and counts among its attractions a Buddhist temple.
Hartjesdagen is famous for an anything goes atmosphere with Amsterdam's gay community taking a leading role. Expect plenty of ostentatious costumes and a true Amsterdam party atmosphere.
