Commissioned by Siemens, the European Green City Index was conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit in December 2009 to chart the performance and goals of 30 European capitals with regard to environmental concerns and climate protection measurements.
Coming in 5th, Amsterdam has a strong position in the index - mainly in areas such as water use, waste disposal and attention to the importance of green spaces in and around the city.
Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo and Vienna were also in the top five. It is significant to note that Amsterdam is located in an area with significantly more traffic and heavy industry than these four other cities. Zürich, Helsinki, Berlin, Brussels and Paris took the sixth to tenth positions.
