By 2015, every business and household in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area will be connected to a high-speed fibre optic network. Thanks to large-scale investment by Reggefiber, its parent company KPN, national and local government and private partners (mainly housing corporations), the region will be at the forefront of fibre infrastructure in Europe.
The Amsterdam Area already has one of the world’s highest broadband concentrations. It also boasts the best possible digital foundation, in the shape of the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX). This powerful and stable global Internet hub has supported the rise of a dynamic digital sector: Internet service providers, mobile operators, web hosts, content and VoIP providers, and applications specialists.
For businesses, the Amsterdam Area’s advanced and rapidly developing digital infrastructure is a unique opportunity to test new services and products. Amsterdam already has a Living Labs programme, which helps facilitate such test situations and helps users swap experiences.
90 per cent of the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area’s businesses and homes have Internet access.
The glass fibre network has 43,000 connections to date.
By 2015, the region’s broadband connections will total 450,000.
The Amsterdam Internet Hub (AMS-IX) is the world’s largest and most stable digital exchange platform. It’s also known for its superior quality and low costs.
The high rate of connectivity means booming IT, media and creative sectors.
