Over 50 courses in entrepreneurship

With the Amsterdam startup ecosystem growing by the day, entrepreneurial skills and mindset become one of the most desired qualities in today’s workforce. No wonder that graduate and undergraduate students in the Amsterdam universities are encouraged to learn the basics of entrepreneurship during their studies.

While there are over 50 courses in various Amsterdam universities that focus on an academic approach to entrepreneurship, lots of programs offer a combination of knowledge and practice and stimulate students to start their own business.

Minor entrepreneurship

Students of the Minor Entrepreneurship have an end-of-semester goal to identify an entrepreneurial opportunity and set up a private company with students from other disciplines. Each year around 700 students complete the Minor Entrepreneurship, creating over 120 startup projects.

In Amsterdam you can do a minor Entrepreneurship during your bachelor studies at the University of Amsterdam, VU University, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and the Amsterdam School the Arts.

Masters in entrepreneurship

Students that would like to specialise in entrepreneurship after their bachelor degree can do the Master Entrepreneurship, delivered by the UvA and VU or follow one of the specialization tracks (Business Administration: Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Business Administration: Entrepreneurship and Management in the Creative Industries). The Master programme gives students a profound academic grasp of entrepreneurship and hones their entrepreneurial skillset that are much in demand with employers. From September 2016 onwards another programme is offered through the Fashion School of AUAS – the Master Fashion Enterprise Creation.

Extracurriculars

Many courses and activities allow students to try their hand at entrepreneurship outside the academic curriculum, such as Summerschool, Startup Launch Class, Honours Programme and ACE Venture Lab programmes.

Summerschool (powered by Rabobank and ACE Venture Lab) helps its participants train their entrepreneurial skills and develop their idea into a complete business plan in just one week. Startup Launch Class (powered by ING, Strategiemakers and ACE Venture Lab) is designed for students that already have their own company and want to validate their business model by getting a real world out-of-the-classroom experience within a lean startup method.

The students of UvA and VU universities that obtain high grades (GPA of at least 7.5) can also follow the Honours Programme Entrepreneurship and Social Entrepreneurship.

Students that are looking for a hands-on entrepreneurial experience and support can join the programmes of a startup accelerator ACE Venture Lab. The accelerator offers sponsored entrepreneurship programmes for students and researchers that either want to learn the basics of entrepreneurship (Explore programme) or start their own science or high-tech companies with the help of accelerator’s network of mentors and industry experts (Bootcamp).
